Re: Fish room question

I would recommend building it to the spec's of a room built for an indoor pool. All walls should have a plastic barrier between the fisroom and the rest of the house. Otherwise, the humidity can get out of control and ruin your house. If you drywall, I would use the kind meant for wet areas (Green Board?)

Re: Fish room question

Tough call on the walls. Green board is good, I like to use FX (fire code) in areas that have electricals running on auto. The best would be to use hardi-backer on as much as possible: at least the lower 3' or so. It is like cement board but not as rough. You can paint it or put up tile.

I have 1/2" waterproof plywood on my walls with the white fiberglass showerboard over it. 100% waterproof, easy to mount items to, clean and neat looking. Not cheap. If your interested I can send you some pictures.

Re: Fish room question

how about ceilings? i plan do rock the room with either green board or dens-glass (fiberglass board) and the walls will be panneled with Alucobond (aluminium composite pannels) its just behind the scenes i think that needs to be more humidity resistant. i want all the tanks mounted in the walls so theoretically its going to be a room inside a room.

Rob is the plywood pressure treated?

Re: Fish room question

No, I have always been a bit nervous about using pressure treated inside the house. I picked it up at Currier lumber. It is Marine Grade for building boats and decking.

Do you mean a total volumn of 1000+ gallon or each tank will be 1000+ gallon?

Re: Fish room question

If i was building a fish room (hmmmm, do I have one already?), I will use a bunch of 100 gallon (72x18x18) tanks. The shallow depth of these tanks are great for coral propagation and holding. You can take top down photo easily for clams etc.
