True the eggrate is inexpensive, black is better, and the foam will definatley take hold. I'll make note of using that method. I have seen tanks with poly foam secured with silicone, sculptured and a sand/rock work attached for a natural look.

Hey Dave,

Is there a particular (Aquarium grade or something) type of silicone you used to adhere the egg crate to the glass?

GE 100% silicone, the large caulk gun tube you can find at most any hardware store. Make sure to get the clear, and stay away from anyhting that is for bathrooms and such cause it has algeacide in it and wouldnt be good for your tank inhabitants.

I might and I stress might be having problems with the expanding foam leaching an unknown chemical into the water. Some coral pieces which I've had for awhile arent doing too hot despite my frequent parameter testing and steady parameters.

I cant find where anyone else that has used the foam is having problems. The problem could be something else as well though who knows.

Here's a link to the foam I used.

Pond foam

David...I hope all goes well with your build and fishroom. Just wandered onto this thread today and really like it. I love the foam but would have had some fears of leaching chemicals. But I think your experienced enough to know what your doing if your building your own 180 setup like that. Hope all goes well and look forward to seeing the final project done and looking great.

Well I finally made the decision, the expanding foam background needs to go. I've got livestock deaths and tissue recession which is seemingly unexplainable. All my parameters are steady and within NSW limits so its time to start removing variables. Kinda sad to see it go cause I really liked the way it looked. There is a silver lining here though, my fish room is on the back side of the tank so now I have basically a room divider tank with 3 viewable sides. The back side of the tank is just as fascinating as the front. When I arranged the rock work I left sand bed all the way around so now I have another side for placing livestock.

Here's my discussion from Marine Depot with Eric Borneman. There's some good info provided by Eric.

gee that's too bad....but I thought that may may happen. But I like your idea of having three viewable sides...sounds allot more interesting and better yet more placement for livestock...good job recognizing the situation...I'll be curious as to how you get all of it out without creating a giant mess.

Its already almost entirely out, just a few small places left with some attached. I should know in a few weeks if that was the problem or not.

May want to consider performing a couple good water changes as well.

3 sided tanks rule. The additional perspective is almost like having two tanks.

Not exactly sure what you're refering to, the background? The plumbing is actually for my closed loop.

I'd like to come up and help with the drilling, but I'm really far behind at work right now and probably wont have much time in the near future.
