Overflow design

Anyone ever seen/used an overflow like this? I found it on another forum. I really like the simplicity of it and the fact that it is so long to get good surface skimming. Anyone see any issures from this design? The guy who made this also has durso pipes and says that the setup if really quite.

Here is the plumbing. Anyone seeing an issue with this if I were to setup a 55 gal the same way?

It's a little hard to tell from the photos but it looks like a Calpho style overflow. I designed one for my 30g before finding out it had already been done. Great minds and all that rubbish I guess. Anyway, I like it. It does a great job of skimming the surface and preserving tank space. The downside is that you need a major snail guard on it. Every freakin snail in the tank seems to make a bee-line for it. Not a problem just something else to make out of egg crate.

In the photo you can see the one in my 30g. You notice that it doesn't run the entire length of the tank. This is the second revision. The first one taught me that acrylic expands when exposed to water and it cracked my tank at one end. So when building one of these I advise leaving a little space at each end for expansion. You need to "float" the overflow in the silicone so it has room to move.

The white part on the top of the overflow is egg crate that is doubled over to form a snail/fish catcher.

Thanks Guys. I think I will use this style on my 55 and I'll be sure to leave some expansion room for the long overflow pipe. Where did you get the mesh that you used on the seahorse tank scott? It looks fairly stiff, but easy to work with. I'm not sure if I would even need a snail guard. The opening is only going to be about 1/4".

gutter guard at Home Depot or Lowes works really well for fish and snail stoppers too!
