DIY skimmer for 5.5gallon

I am planning on building a small skimmer to go in the sump for my 5.5g. I've got about 3" x 5" x as tall as I want to work with . I ordered a 1 foot length of 3 inch acrylic tube and 1 foot of 1 3/4 acrylic tube(riser tube). I've got some weld-on #4 coming and already have a fair amount of 1/4 acrylic sheet. I'm going to use either a 0800.040 or 5024.040 tunze pump and jet from a 9002 skimmer.

Any advice on design or how to plumb it to get the most efficiency and least micro bubbles back into the tank?

I have an idea or two but would like some pointers from someone who has built their own.

Thanks,
Jack
