Reef Builders - The Source for Reef Keeping Information

Picked this up a few weeks ago, it was under 250 watt MH and looked well. I've got it under Overdriven NO bulbs with moderate flow. Can someone tell me what it is and how best to care for it. You can see from the pics thats its losing tissue and bleaching. I've allready moved it to a lower location on the rockwork.

I'd do betadine dip on it, frag whats left. This an orange pavona? Hi up in the tank, with moderate to high flow.

I'm afraid dipping at this point would just create more stress. I was considering fragging to spred it around and hopefully save at least part of it. You want a piece?

Done, but I am telling you a quick dip will help. I just went down this road with Micros, and Acans....lol I am an expert LPS Dipper.

slightly off topic but how do you dip lps?

Also it does look like a pavona, good luck with the save.

For dipping there are various products available at most LFS directions are on the packaging. Typically you mix the dipping agent with tank water in a bucket or suitable container ( not your display ) then place the coral in there with a powerhead for a few minutes.

I've been doing alot of checking around to figure this one out and here's what I've found.

Pavona Maldivensis

My research has also indicated that they tend to do best under moderate to low lighting and strong flow. So I guess a move is in order to a lower light location.

Yes, it does look like a Pavona to me as well. Due to the stress, I would probably keep it low, but I wouldn't bank on keeping it there, especially under NO. Do you plan to keep it under NO forever? If yes, then I'd move it up after a couple weeks. Not to the top of the tank, but probably not far off.

Ditto on the dip if you haven't already. Not necessarily to kill the nasties (bugs), but certainly to prevent an infection. Do you have any Lugol's?

Tne NO is overdriven with Icecaps, and bright enough to bleach corals if placed too high too soon so I started them about midway. They had come from under 250 MH and were placed high. So I dont uderstand why they are bleaching. I've fragged it into a bout 10 pieces and placed the frags in different tanks under various lighting/flow schemes to see where it does best.

I've hd a bit of time to figure this guy out. I made up a bunch of frags and still have a good sized portion of the parent. All of the frags placed under direct lighting regardless of the type of lighting have bleached on the portion exposed to the light. The frags left in a completely shaded area are doing well. and the underside of the pieces that bleached on the top still has color. So this coral appears to prefer low indirect light. Flow doesnt seem to be an issue at this point, but I would say variable at the least anywhere from low to high is probably acceptable.
