Gonipora

Has anyone managed to keep this species for more than a year?

I see that the FS's around are all awash in this species but some research has yielded an "expert only" rating.

Goni's(my personal favorite) aren't hard to keep nor alveapora! As I was told they will not survive in a tank. I think it was 18 months something like that..I've kept them succesfully for up to 8 months..they did not die I just had to empty the tank..I've even brought one back from the dead!!!!!
AND I'M NO EXPERT!

For most people they just do not do well. The green/browns a bit more hardy, but this one really should just be left in the reef. I have a red that is coming back slow, but they are tough to keep

I'm gonna disagree Rob, everything I've read regarding Goni's is the Greens are the most difficult. They do require feeding to be kept healthy. I have agreen one that I've had very close to a year, and it continues to grow and do well. It was purchased as a baby which had dropped from the parent while in the LFS tank.

Check out Goniopora.org for more info.

I have one that's pink with blue mouths for almost a year now and it's still going strong. I don't really do anything special to care for it.

This is the first paragraph from the link supplied.

It is a commonly known fact that the genus of corals called Goniopora meet an early demise when taken from the ocean and placed into the tiny synthetic microcosm of a "reef" aquarium. For years, saltwater hobbyists have conjectured reasons for their short term survival of 1 year or less in captivity. The prevailing theory is that the coral endures a slow decline in health from an extended period of starvation which eventually results in its premature death. Although there have been scattered incidents of captive Goniopora corals surviving for 2 or more years, it is still not known exactly why a few can survive while many others perish.

The page goes on to say new foods may make it better in the future. I'll wait, I love the corals, but hate to see them waste away
