Help Please!!! (Blue Hippo Tang)

My blue hippo has some white spots on him. I just got him 2 days ago. I know its ich and I was wondering if it will go away and he will be fine or if I should do something about it. Is there any meds that I can use that wont hurt my inverts??

Yup, Tang = Ich Magnet

You can try No-Ich. I've had success with it in smaller tanks like my 30 and 46 in the past. I didn't have any luck recently with it in my 180 however. My wife and I had to remove the fish and put them in a QT for hypo-salinity treatment. She just got the QT down to 1.012 and now the 25 day waiting period begins. The main tank has to remain fishless for 6 to 8 weeks to be sure the cycle has been broken. On the plus side the No-Ich didn't do any harm to any corals or inverts.

That's pretty much the choices. Roll the dice with products like No-Ich, which might in fact work, or be sure and put the fish in a QT and do a hypo-salinity treatment on them which is a pain in the butt.

I hate ich.

There is no ich medication for marine ich ( actually Cryptocaryon irritans) which has been proven to work and be safe with reef invertebrates including corals. If there was everyone would be using it. Many products make the claim, but you will not find the scientific data to back up their claims. Marine ich has a life cycle during part of which it leaves the host. This leads many people to believe the medication has worked just to have the ich inexplainably return days or weeks later, and usually worse with each reoccurance. Here's a couple articles to read.

The fish might fight it off.. However, the display tank is now infected and can cause the tang and any other weakened fish to come done with it later.

Tangs are pretty bad about getting ich. Something about small scales I think I read. Anyway, quarantine, quarantine, quarantine...

like everyone else said... get all the fish out ! no fish for them to host on for 6 to 8 weeks like someone else said! with no host they will die off... i just treated my fish in a quarantine tank then put them back in the display after the 6 to 8 weeks ... it's all you can do! GL !
