| I do not stir my sand bed, but once a month I do vacuum the top 1" one side and then the next month the other side. Been doing this for 20 years with no issues and several tanks. The key here is not to disturb the bottom 2" on a 3 1/2" sand bed.

I agree with chief and NHLIVES methods. I don't stir, my Nassarius Snails and Sand Sifting Stars work at the sand. I'll blow away at the sand if red cyano algae gets spotty.

| Oh, man. This thread is reminding me of the disaster I had trying sand with a freshwater tank for cory catfish. I had one that kept laying eggs all over the glass and I had heard that they love sand. I decided to have an all cory cat tank (it was only 10 gal), but the ammonia spiked from stuff in the sand. It was cute to watch the sand flow through their gills though. They loved it while it lasted. I did stir it though. Not sure that helped. |
