Calcearous macro algae called Neomeris. Usually it just shows up and doesnt hang aroung long, but I've seen pics of some tanks where it completely takes over.

I havent found where anyone has determined its specific requirements ( why it flourishes in some and not in others ). It is a calcearous algae so it will put demand on your calcium, alk, and magnesium. Being that it is an algae it will also consume some nitrates, but not sure on phosphates, since phosphates can inhibit calcification. Its requirements are going to be very similar to Halimeda, and perhaps even skeleton building corals such as Acropora. I find it to be an attractive algae, and from time to time see it in my tank, but it never lasts. I would say enjoy it while it lasts, but if you would prefer to remove it I would guess judging by it's growth that the green growing tip is where the action is and that the white bottom is dead calcium so a large siphon hose should be adequate to remove it permanantly except of course for any dormant spores residing in the rock, and possibly there is some sort of root holdfast which can regenerate a new plant in the rock. I would be interested in figuring out more about it, but like I said I have been unable to keep it in culture.
