OK, I have never used the Randy's dosing technique because I do not feel safe using non-food grade products in the tank, so I cannot speak to build up of bromide in the tank; but

PLEASE read the links above and consider if the risk to return is right for your situation.

I have been checking on research grade Calcium Chloride for about a month. It is not inexpensive (that is why b-Ionic is more than driveway melt)

I will update the thread if I find a source for it that is pure.

Just got a bag of Dowflake and was going to give it a try. No reason to let it go to waste. Guess I'll be using it up today on my driveway and sidewalk.

You folks thought it was funny to run to Home depot than by the LFS products. I guess I am grinning a little bit.

Check the date on the bag, if its prior tp Dec "05" you're all set. There's a good chance that that older bags are still in circulation.

What is sad is to see the car crashes this is causing on other sites. Some people found a cost effective way to dose their tanks. Once it is found to be questionable and everyone should revisit their decision processes they start forming a mob to storm the walls.

My torch is lit! Do we need wooden stakes or silver bullets? I'm sure they killed everything in my tank atleast once. Any lawyers out ther ready to plead my case, I deserve restitution! Actually I bought my Dow awhile back and the bags are dated prior to the memo. Not too much left though.

Peter and Denis the bags I picked up are dated 2 05. We're safe. I'll use up my B-Ionic before I move onto Randys 2 part. Gives me time to find Mag Flake, unless there's an issue in the works for magnisium dosing.

I have ordered bulk MgCl2 and CaCl2 from Two Part Solution, Discount Calcium and Alkalinity Supplies. With shipping it is still cheaper than buying b-Ionic.

I have a BIG clam and go through this stuff quickly. At least a 1/4 cup per day.

Not too shabby, seems like it'll be a good place for a pooled order in the next few months for a reduced S&H. And they have Reef Chile....wooohoo, good stuff.

According to Randy, the newer DOW Food Grade has the same problem as the newer DOW Flakes. It seems that Two Part is claiming their stocks are OK. I have sent them an email to confirm.

However, IF their product is OK, it is probably using older stocks from DOW. The question is, "What happends when they run out of that?"

FWIW, for the occasional user that just boosts calicium and alk with it every so often, it really shouldn't make a difference with regular water changes. See what Randy himself has to say about it here.

Only got a 30 gallon so have been using SeaChem Advantage Calcium and Reef Builder. You get a lot more because it's dry. Good stuff IMO.

It looks we should have a realiable source for a few years anyway. Here is a response from Two Part:

Quote:
We have been stockpiling calcium chloride with lot numbers predating the December 31, 2006 date on which Dow changed their manufacturing process. There has been a resurgence of a letter dating back to August of 2005 in which Dow first states its intent to change its manufacturing process that would result in an increase in bromide. However, Dow on December 15, 2005, sent out another letter entitled "Addendum to Letter of August 2005: Notification of Impurity Profile Change in Calcium Chloride Products". Item 1 from this letter states:

"The date for ending the bromide removal process, initially scheduled for December 31st of 2005, has changed to December 31, 2006.”

This letter has been linked to earlier, but buried in some of the same threads discussing the bromide issue that have posted the original August 05 letter.

We have been aware of this since starting our business and verified that all Dow we purchased had lot numbers starting with U. Lot numbers starting in U were manufactured in 2006. We have also been stockpiling as much 2006 Dow as possible in order to provide an uninterrupted supply of economical calcium chloride to our fellow reefers. This also allows us time to source an alternative source.

As a last note, we use our products in our own tanks. If we didn’t think a product was safe enough for our own use we wouldn’t sell it to others.

Let me know if you have any further questions.
